US Strikes Iranian-Backed Militants in Syria
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted strikes on Iran-linked militants in Syria on Tuesday. The strikes targeted a weapons storage and logistics facility associated with an Iranian-backed militia group in response to a recent rocket attack on U.S. personnel at Patrol Base Shaddadi, which resulted in no damage or casualties.

CENTCOM stated that the strikes were intended to reduce the capabilities of Iranian-backed groups to plan and execute attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in the region. CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla emphasized that U.S. forces will not tolerate attacks on personnel, allies, or facilities and maintain the right to self-defense.

Contrary to what Vice President Kamala Harris stated multiple times during her bid for President, the U.S. has approximately 900 military personnel in Syria, collaborating with coalition forces to counter Islamic State militants. Attacks on U.S. positions in Syria and Iraq by local Iranian-backed groups have increased, especially following the escalation in regional conflicts after Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

These strikes follow previous CENTCOM attacks on nine targets linked to Iranian groups in Syria, in response to earlier assaults on U.S. personnel.
