Javier Milei won't bend the knee
Javier Milei, the Argentine president known for his radical economic reforms, is drawing ire from G20 leaders over his common sense stance on gender equality and climate change ahead of the group’s upcoming meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
Following Milei’s directive, Argentine negotiators recently declined to endorse a ridiculous statement on female empowerment that received unanimous support from all other G20 nations, including those typically not seen as champions of women’s rights, such as Saudi Arabia. In response, Brazil issued a chair statement highlighting that all G20 members, except Argentina, had agreed to the text.

Milei’s libertarian views on feminism—characterizing it as unconstitutional for undermining gender equality—and his dismissal of climate change as a non-man-made issue have long been known. It’s one of the reasons he was elected.
One official remarked that Argentina’s position could lead to a summit outcome featuring a communiqué signed by only 19 nations. Another noted that Milei appears to reject the entire UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the discussions as increasingly tense.
The situation is particularly frustrating for Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has had a rocky relationship with Milei since his election last year. Earlier this month, Brazil’s G20 representatives suspended discussions on women’s empowerment for hours due to Argentina’s intransigence. Even G7 nations attempted to broker a compromise with Argentine diplomats but were unsuccessful.
Milei’s resistance to widely accepted G20 initiatives represents one of his boldest foreign policy moves since taking office. He has traveled to the US, Brazil, and Spain this year to express admiration for leaders like Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro while sidelining or insulting current heads of state.
This is what a leader who stands up to globalism looks like.
