Xi Meets Biden
Chinese President Xi Jinping held a final two-hour meeting with outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden at the APEC summit in Lima, Peru, pledging to work with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration to stabilize U.S.-China relations. Discussions addressed trade disputes, Taiwan, cybersecurity, and the South China Sea.

Xi emphasized China’s goal of maintaining stable ties with the U.S. and managing differences. This comes as Trump’s plans for 60% tariffs on Chinese imports and hawkish appointments raise concerns in Beijing. Biden urged continued leader-to-leader dialogue post-transition, citing risks of conflict.
Biden criticized Beijing’s military activity around Taiwan as destabilizing, while Xi condemned Taiwan’s leadership for pushing separatism. Xi also rejected U.S. involvement in the South China Sea, where China disputes international rulings against its claims.

Xi’s Latin America tour includes trade agreements and infrastructure projects, raising U.S. concerns about potential Chinese intelligence or military outposts near American borders. Xi dismissed such claims as “baseless”.
With Trump’s return to office imminent, APEC leaders are closely watching how U.S.-China relations will evolve under his administration. Both nations face significant challenges in managing their complex relationship.
