US Strikes Houthi Weapons Depots in Yemen to Protect Key Shipping Routes
The United States conducted airstrikes on Saturday night targeting advanced weapons storage facilities belonging to Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, according to the Pentagon. These facilities reportedly contained weapons used to threaten both military and civilian vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Houthi-controlled Al Masirah television network reported three raids in Sanaa’s southern Al Sabeen district, alleging that both American and British forces were involved. However, the United Kingdom has not confirmed its participation in these strikes.
The U.S. and Britain have frequently targeted Houthi positions in Yemen since January, responding to Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The Houthis have also launched attacks on Israel using drones and ballistic missiles, actions they claim are in support of Hamas, following the October 7, 2023, invasion of southern Israel, which led to the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Over the past year, more than 100 Houthi attacks have resulted in four sailor deaths, two sunken ships, and one hijacked vessel with a detained crew. The attacks have caused significant disruption along a key maritime route responsible for about 12% of global trade. The U.S. and British forces have launched several retaliatory strikes against Houthi targets in response.
A recent United Nations report highlights the Houthis’ increasing military power, attributing it to substantial support from Iran and Hezbollah. This support has strengthened the Houthis’ regional influence, particularly within Iran’s “Axis of Resistance,” which includes groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
