Former president Donald Trump will not face a trial for the most recent case brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith until after election day.

Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan held a “status” hearing Thursday morning where Trump’s lawyers entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
This is the second iteration of Jack Smith’s attempts to incarcerate the former president- his first attempt failed after the US Supreme Court ruled that a president is immune from prosecution for official acts in office.

Smith’s shaky case relates to Trump’s alleged attempt at overturning the 2020 election results. Mainly, Smith claims the 45th president pressured then Vice President Mike Pence to reject electoral votes as president of the Senate.

Official charges this time around are conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Judge Chutkan set deadlines for all paperwork required for the case to proceed to November 7th, the day after election day.
