Trump Taps Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to Lead NIH
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford professor and critic of COVID lockdowns and vaccine mandates, to head the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Bhattacharya, known for co-authoring the 2020 Great Barrington Declaration promoting herd immunity through natural infection, will collaborate with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Trump praised Bhattacharya and Kennedy for their vision to restore the NIH’s reputation and tackle chronic illness and public health challenges. The NIH, with its $48 billion budget, funds critical research, including breakthroughs in cancer, vaccines, and mRNA technology.

Bhattacharya opposed lockdowns very early on, calling them a “public health mistake.”
Trump also named Jim O’Neill as HHS deputy secretary, emphasizing management reform. Trump’s focus remains on challenging conventional public health strategies and reshaping how the U.S. addresses medical research and health policy.
