A while back, my family was preparing to leave the house on a routine shopping trip. As I stretched my shirt down to cover my waistband, my 5-year-old son asked – “Why do you have your gun?” I realized at that moment that I had never discussed “why”. I took time to discuss various angles until I found one that stuck. As I continued to reflect on the situation, I originally thought I could help other parents facilitate the conversation by writing a children’s book. In the process, I quickly realized that with zero artistic ability, I was stuck with a mediocre poem. It may not be a comprehensive guide to talking to your children about concealed carry, but to quote Colin Powell, “It worked for me”.
As I prepare to leave the house,
Another time with you.
I grab everything that I may need,
Just like I always do.
I grab my wallet and my keys.
I pack you a small snack.
Last, I take my pistol
And tuck it down my back.
I’m ready to go now
And I look back at you.
You’re planted in your place,
And I know the question’s due.
I can see it in your eyes,
I can tell you find it scary.
I hear your small voice ask,
“Daddy, why do you carry?”
“Is it to stop a bad guy,
Who tries to take our stuff?
Or is it for a robber,
Who’s trying to be tough?”
“No, it’s not my son”,
As I wrinkle up my brow.
“I take this question seriously,
And it’s time that you know now.”
“Stuff is just a bunch of things,
And all things can be replaced.
But you’re the one and only you.
It’s a LIFE I’d hate to waste.”
“Now, every life has value
And I hope you know that’s true.
But if the choice is us or them,
I’m always choosing you.”
“So, every time we leave the house,
I pray with all my heart,
That God will always keep us safe,
But I must do my part.”
The demographic that would choose to read these words would be in agreement. However, I wish people with dissenting opinions would take the time to look into the ‘why’ behind concealed carry. “End Gun Violence” flags and bumper stickers carry a message in opposition to private gun ownership altogether. However, do they realize that we want that too? It would be asinine for anyone to advocate for gun violence. Men or women who practice concealed carry, are not out looking for trouble, but stay vigilant and have committed to stop it if necessary. So talk to your kids about it, creating the next generation of law-abiding citizens is our shared responsibility.
