San Francisco Hires Fat Consultant
San Francisco, a city plagued by homelessness, open drug markets, and rising crime, has found its latest progressive distraction: a taxpayer-funded “weight stigma” consultant. The Department of Public Health has hired Virgie Tovar, an outspoken advocate for “fat positivity” and author of You Have the Right to Remain Fat.
Tovar called her appointment a “dream come true,” but for many residents, it’s a nightmare emblematic of the city’s out-of-touch priorities. While businesses shutter and families flee crime-ridden neighborhoods, San Francisco’s leadership has decided to focus on how people feel about their weight.
Critics are outraged. “Is this real?” Elon Musk tweeted, capturing the disbelief of many Californians. Others were more direct: “San Francisco is just making their problems worse,” said one user. Another added, “You have the right to remain fat, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy!”

Tovar’s hiring comes as the city’s downtown continues to deteriorate. Iconic businesses like Nordstrom and Starbucks have closed due to rampant theft and unsafe conditions. Meanwhile, the Tenderloin district remains a haven for drug addicts and criminals. Rather than fixing these existential problems, the city is pouring resources into promoting “weight neutrality.”
San Francisco officials have not clarified Tovar’s responsibilities, salary, or how this role will improve the lives of residents. While advocates claim addressing “weight stigma” is a progressive public health priority, the practical impact of this consultancy remains unclear.
