Russian airstrikes in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv caused neighboring Poland to scramble fighter aircraft as a precautionary measure Tuesday night.

Poland has been on alert for the last several weeks due to Russian escalation across western Ukraine.
At least 7 people were killed in the drone and missile attack on Lviv, and many more were injured in the bombardment that saw much of the city destroyed.

Russia has increased its attack efforts inside Ukraine as retaliation for the incursion into its own Kursk region several weeks ago. The Kremlin maintains that Russian forces only target military, energy, and transport infrastructure. Still, the attack in Lviv and others like it this week have killed nearly 100 civilians and wounded hundreds more.

Poland is undergoing an increase in their defense capabilities, recently purchasing 96 Apache attack helicopters, hundreds of air-to-air missiles, and about 50 Patriot missile systems.
Poland has the largest army in the European Union at 200,000.
