An explosion in Iran killed 51 people and injured at least 20 inside a coal mine this weekend.

The event was caused by a methane explosion in Iran’s South Khorasan Province deep inside a mine operated by the Madanjoon energy company.
According to the the governor of the province, Ali Akbar, almost 80% of the Iran’s coal comes from South Khorasan.
In one of the blocks, the rescue efforts have completed- each worker assigned to the area was either killed or wounded. There are 2 blocks left.

Iran’s Red Crescent reports that 24 people are still missing.
With coal mining infrastructure still under development in the country, Iran produces about 1.3 million short tonnes of coal annually , while consuming about 1.5 million- making them a net importer.
