An Israeli strike in central Syria killed 16 Sunday night according to Syrian news outlets.

Intelligence experts familiar with the matter reported that a Syrian military chemical weapons research facility was the target. Iranian scientists and military strategists were working at the site. Syrian health officials say the casualties were civilians.

Israel commonly carries out attacks in Syria, often targeting Iranian-backed facilities and operations. Iran has a sizeable military presence in Syria.
The attack further complicates Iran-Isreal tensions following the assassination of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran back in July.
