The UN announced Thursday morning, that the International Atomic Energy Agency has agreed to monitor Ukrainian nuclear energy assets during the ongoing war with Russia.

Both Ukraine and Russia have targeted their opponents’ energy infrastructure, but missile and drone attacks on substations threaten the safety of nuclear power plants- which supply Ukraine with half of the country’s power.
It is expected that the presence of international inspectors will dissuade Russian attacks on nuclear energy infrastructure. The first IAEA visit is set for next week.
The Director General of the IAEA is in Ukraine now monitoring the situation and has been a frequent visitor of Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the Ukrainian nuclear facility under Russian control since the beginning of the war.

Russia continues to hammer Ukrainian energy infrastructure, deemed a legitimate military target. Officials have announced that about 50% of its power-generating capacity has been lost and it relies almost solely on nuclear power.
Nuclear power stations require external power to maintain the stability of atomic materials.
