The German right-wing party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), is forecasted to win at least one election in the coming state elections in eastern Germany this Sunday. The victory would put pressure on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to address the economy, immigration, and the war in Ukraine.
Polls show the AfD likely to win in two German state elections. As the far right makes gains, those who believe in equality and diversity must mobilise. The party, viewed by liberals as “far-right”, has large support in the formerly communist eastern part of the country but will likely be unable to form a government coalition because other political groups refuse to cooperate with it.
If victorious this weekend, it will be the first time a right-wing party can grab the most seats in a German state parliament since the 1930s. Its power will make difficult alliance building and would grant it the ability to block constitutional changes.
The AfD might even be able to appoint some judges.

AfD’s main platform is immigration, boosted by the recent mass stabbing that took place a week ago in Solingen, in which a Syrian with ties to ISIS was accused of killing three Germans and injuring 10.
