Escalation in Lebanon
JERUSALEM/BEIRUT, Oct 2 (The Real Republic) – Israeli forces have begun ground operations in southern Lebanon, engaging Hezbollah fighters for the first time since Israel expanded its military campaign into the region. Israel’s military deployed infantry and armored units, including the Golani and 188th Armored Brigades, suggesting an escalation beyond previous operations focused on commando raids.

On Tuesday, Israel’s air defenses were activated against missile strikes from Iran, which Iran described as its largest assault on Israel to date. Most missiles were intercepted by Israeli and U.S.-led defenses. Israel’s military vowed to respond strongly to further provocations, despite Iran indicating the attack would cease barring additional triggers.
Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has reported clashes with Israeli forces in the border town of Maroun el-Ras and claims to have fired rockets at Israeli military positions. The group’s media head stated that these were just the initial engagements, and that Hezbollah possesses sufficient resources to continue fighting.
