Everyone should have a plan in place for when the proverbial shit hits the fan. Your plan should detail your decisions about either bugging in or bugging out. Bugging in is essentially a shelter-in-place strategy where everything you need to survive the emergency is in your home. Bugging out is the opposite. Bugging out can be your initial plan if an alternate location better serves your needs or as a contingency plan if your bug-in strategy becomes too lengthy or too dangerous. In your preparations, you should develop means to address the latter.
In high-stress situations, safety and security can quickly become an issue. In major events, people without similar preparations will also seek means to provide for themselves or their families. Good people are capable of evil to save themselves and or their family. While understandable, you may face similar situations and should have the means to safeguard against these threats. Decide your best means of doing so. When making these determinations, bugging in is often more straightforward. Most people know the available means of providing security at home. When bugging out, these means must be transported with you.
Firearms and knives are commonly chosen for protection because of their defense capabilities. If utilized, they should be readily accessible only to those trained and capable of using them, without adding additional risk to themselves or others in your group. Non-lethal options such as pepper spray or tasers can provide alternatives when lethal force is not warranted or could escalate tensions.
Securing your living space during a bug-in scenario potentially involves fortifying entry points, employing robust locks, or reinforcing windows. Consider additional measures such as security cameras or alarms to deter and detect potential threats. In these scenarios, the structure itself is your first line of defense and should be secure. These preemptive measures should be taken immediately since your home offers security to your family daily.
Conversely, when bugging out, your security measures must be portable and ready to transport immediately when needed. Preplan your routes and ensure your destination provides similar means of protection to your home in a bug-in scenario. With this in place, safety during travel poses the biggest challenge. It is prudent to prepare a kit that includes your chosen means of protection and have it ready to grab and go. The last thing anyone wants to do in an emergency is scramble to gather necessary items.
Here’s the 5.11 bag as now reconfigured. Call it a bug out bag. Not too heavy, I almost have everything I need. I put the med kit on the outside. Also a tq pouch and a radio pouch. I think the shovel is going to work good there and the hatchet fits too. It’s not too heavy. pic.twitter.com/bLpBKoWpIr

Preparing a bug-out bag is one of the simplest forms of prepping. There are ample lists available to provide you with ideas of what should be included, however, it should always be based on your personal needs and the type of emergency you’re most likely to face. For security, if a firearm is chosen, it is best to choose something that can be transported easily. Portability also applies to ammunition. While larger calibers offer more power, smaller calibers allow more ammunition to be carried. These decisions should be based on personal preference and individual comfort.
Beyond individual preparations, forming or joining trustworthy groups can significantly enhance your safety and resilience. In times of crisis, people rarely survive alone. Establishing a network of like-minded individuals who are willing to share resources and support each other can provide a sense of security and mutual aid that is invaluable during emergencies. Collaborating with others allows for the pooling of skills, supplies, and labor, increasing overall preparedness. In these scenarios, it is wise to choose people who can hold their own. It is just as important to ensure that you are physically and mentally prepared, as you will likely be sized up the same by others.
Physical fitness is an equally vital component of ensuring safety and security in any emergency. Regular physical fitness can enhance your ability to manage physical demands during a crisis. If you have a family, children will depend on your ability to conduct the bulk of physical labor. You must be able to do so. Maintaining physical fitness is highly beneficial to your health and should be integrated into your daily routine.
You should also train your mind. Seek out information that may prove pertinent to survival and the challenges that may arise for you and your family. Training in first aid, CPR, and other medical skills could be invaluable to provide immediate care in the event of injury or illness. This is once again useful knowledge at all times, even when not in crisis. While formal training is available, there are other means to obtain the knowledge and skills to make yourself useful in basic life-saving.
Ensuring safety and security during a crisis requires a multi-faceted approach. It can be a daunting task when observed at a macro level, however, when taking one aspect at a time, you will reap the benefits in everyday life. It’s a crazy world and being able to protect yourself and provide security should be at the forefront of your mind. Preparations for personal safety and security is not just a plan, it’s a lifestyle.
