The eastern German state of Brandeburg is holding elections today, with right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) expected to win with almost 30% of the vote. The likely victory comes after AfD won the similar matched Thuringia election just a few weeks ago beating out Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats.

The AfD is considered by those on the left as “far-right” and have been the first party labeled as such to win state elections in Germany since World War Two.
Although AfD has won in Thuringia, almost won in Saxony, and should win in Brandenburg, other political parties refuse to work with it in coalition agreements. Without a majority victory, the party will not be part of a regional government.

Brandenburg is home to more than 2.5 million Germans and has been governed by the Social Democrat party since 1990. An AfD victory would deal an embarrassing blow to the left and its Chancellor Scholz.
