Only 31% of Americans say they have confidence that the press reports news fairly and accurately.
United States, Oct 16 (The Real Republic) – According to a new Gallup poll released on Monday, fewer than one-third of Americans trust the U.S. news media, marking a record low. The survey indicates a slight decline of 1 percentage point from the previous year in the percentage of Americans who believe the media reports the news fully and accurately. This trend has been steadily decreasing since 2018.
For the third consecutive year, the number of Americans expressing complete distrust in the media exceeds those who have any level of trust. The latest poll shows 36% of respondents stating they completely distrust the media, a drop from 39% in 2023.

Meanwhile, the percentage of individuals with “not very much” confidence in the media has risen to 33% this year.
The poll highlights a significant partisan divide, with only 12% of Republicans expressing trust in media reporting compared to 54% of Democrats. Notably, this gap has been narrowing in recent years. In 2022, about 70% of Democrats reported confidence in the media.

The poll sampled 1,007 adult Americans from across the country and was conducted via phone interviews during the first two weeks of September, using a random selection process.
Gallup first posed the question of media trust to Americans in 1972 and has conducted this poll almost annually since 1997. In the 1970s, trust in the media hovered around 70%, which fell to approximately 55% by the late 1990s and has continued to decline over the past two decades.
