WASHINGTON, Oct 10 (The Real Republic) – Top congressional Democrats indicated they would not commit to certifying the 2024 election if former President Donald Trump is victorious. House Oversight Committee member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) expressed uncertainty about certifying a Trump win, despite previously objecting to Trump’s electors in 2017. Raskin stated he would accept a Trump victory only if the election were “free, fair and honest,” adding that he does not assume that would be the case.
In a video from a February 2024 panel discussion, Raskin speculated that Congress might invalidate a Trump victory, even at the risk of civil unrest. House Rules Committee member Jim McGovern (D-MA) echoed similar sentiments, stating certification would depend on the circumstances of the election.
FLASHBACK: Jamie Raskin claims Congress will STOP TRUMP on J6, 2025 and create “civil war conditions.”

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) noted the need to ensure all rules are followed, given her past objections to George W. Bush’s victory in 2005. Vice President Kamala Harris has not yet stated her position on certifying a Trump win.
Historically, Democrats have contested election outcomes, raising questions about the legitimacy of various Republican victories. Notably, Biden has previously expressed doubts about the legitimacy of elections, including his claims regarding the 2000 election results.
Democrats have also labeled elections as “stolen” or “fraudulent” in various instances, including comments from former Vice President Al Gore regarding the 2000 election and Hillary Clinton’s remarks about the 2016 election.
