America is divided on abortion, but the divide is shrinking because fewer people are willing to oppose it. The sad part is the amount of Christians, or those who claim to be, who are willing to compromise on the issue. Many Christians have generally held a pro-life position due to their political alignments but not because of an internalized view of right and wrong. As abortion becomes more contested, we see the conservatives, largely, compromising. This is because abortion was never “their issue”, just “an issue”. I want to posit to you today that Christ is your King and there is no such thing as an evil that is not your issue. Therefore, we have no choice but to align ourselves with the Biblical teachings given by God. This article is meant to solidify your foundation in the truth, give you ammunition to hold to when the waters rise, and maybe even convict you of your compromise. I believe the teachings of Christ have perfect application to the topics of our time, specifically abortion. Since the murder of innocent children is as about as common as asking, “Would you like fries with that?”, it is demanded of us, as creations, to ask how our Creator views such recreational slaughter. To go about this, we must first show the identity of Christ as God, discuss what God says in the Bible about the Unborn, and then, what that means for the world. If you stick with me, I believe you will see that God hates partiality and demands the righteousness of His people. This article will not be exhaustive, but my prayer is that this is edifying to believers.
Christ is God
This statement is crucial to our discussion; abortionists will decree that Jesus Christ never spoke about abortion, therefore Christians have no authority to voice any opinion. Even if Christ explicitly used the word abortion in the Bible, they still wouldn’t care. Nonetheless, this is a main argument of murderers. Why is this so important? Well, because God actually discusses human-induced miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) in the Bible. This may come as a shock to many, which is why it is paramount we defend the Trinity and the deity of Jesus Christ. One of my favorite passages of scripture declares this truth for us quite poetically, John 1:1-5. This passage is where the term “Logos” comes from, specifically speaking, Jesus is the “Logos”. Logos is the Greek term for “The Word”, and it is used to show the authority of Christ in God. Reading John’s gospel, we see that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1-2). This passage shows us that Christ is God and was with God in the beginning, speaking to the nature of our Triune God. If you continue through verse 5, you learn that through Him (Christ), all things are made and without Him, nothing would exist. Life, everything that we are and everything of creation is of Christ, if there was no Christ there would be no Life. If Christ is the giver of Life and from Him proceed all things, then we conclude that Christ is God.
While that one verse speaks volumes, I will give you more defenses to my claim; one is never enough. I will call your attention back to the foundation of the world, in the beginning. In Genesis the Bible says, “Then God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26). God is telling us about the creation of man but specifically uses “בְּצַלְמֵ֖נוּ” which is Hebrew for “Our image”, showing this verse is not just a translation but true in its original form. Humans were made in the image of God, yet no human has seen God the Father in His true form, we can conclude we look like God looks based on what He tells us. We also see the word, “our”, implicating another involved in our creation. I want to be careful not to imply a plurality of God, for which there is none. The doctrine of the Trinity is too deep for today. Yet you see the implications of the text, God the Father was not without God the Son. During the earthly ministry of Christ, Jesus is questioned many times by the Jews on His identity, but one time He answers quite specifically. In John 10:30, Jesus is speaking to a group of Jews so said to Him to tell them if He was the Messiah or not. In Jesus’ response He says, “I and the Father are one.”. There is nothing left for me to explain.
What God the Father and God the Son say about the Unborn
The Bible never uses the term abortion, but the Bible does discuss the death of a child in the womb, this occurs in the Law of God, from the Exodus. In Exodus 21:22-25 we are given a clear understanding of how God views unborn children. The passage says, “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” What we see here, is that even in the case of a human-induced accidental miscarriage, God demands the man’s life for the baby’s life. Therefore, we see God values the unborn child at the same level He values a full-grown man.
Not only does God value the life of an unborn child, but David also tells us in the Book of Psalms how precious we are to the Lord. We are shown that we were made intentionally and known by God in the womb. Not known, as in known of but known, actively. The original word implies intimacy, God knew us in our mother’s womb actively and intimately. Psalms 139:13-16 tells us, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. (14) I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. (16) Your eyes saw my unformed substance”. Sometimes when I read the living word of God, I feel ashamed for even trying to explain it in my own terms, there is such beauty in the Bible. Please see what the Word tells us, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, intimately known by God.
These examples are just a few of the many, the Bible is filled with verses about the sanctity of life and the value of the innocent to God. Humanity is a creation of God, one that He greatly cherishes; why would He be inconsistent with His application of value? God values His creation; therefore, He values the Unborn equal. God hates unequal weights and measures (Proverbs 20:10).
Message to the World
As Paul often likes to say, “Do you not know, have you not heard?” The Lord God is not one to trifle with inconsistency or partiality; these things are an abomination to Him. What message do you expect to send regarding adults as humans and the unborn as sub-humans? There is no basis for this, it is intellectual suicide and utterly debased. There are two types of abortionists, the cowards and the calloused. The cowards tell you that you can do what you want with your body, that it is a woman’s choice. They are swept away with the waves, adherent to the “prince of the power of the air”. Cowards have never thought through the inconsistency of “it’s just a fetus”, and they have never given a thought to the value of a child. Why? Because if they did, they couldn’t hold on to their self-righteous virtue. Their naivety is self-inflicted because they can’t handle the truth.
The callous are the intellectually honest cohort but they are the dangerous ones. To be fair, intelligence is always more dangerous than not. The callous may be straight or they may be crooked, but they are acutely aware of their actions and the consequences of such. The crooked are the politicians, they masquerade as protecting reproductive rights (I could write a book about how murder ain’t that), but they know full well the products of their labor. The straight are people like Bill Maher who openly call out abortion as murder yet justify it with the supposed need to curb population growth. Those who shoot straight normally talk themselves out of most rooms, for now, because even the crooked don’t like to publicly discuss child sacrifice. Make no mistake, the callous sacrifice children, they know it and they don’t care.
The only message we have to bring to these people, each one of them, callous or cowardly, is the Truth. The Biblical Truth. The Lord your God makes no room for the murder of innocents. Christ our Lord has declared the value of the Unborn, He formed us in our mother’s womb, and He knew us before the foundation of the world. The voiceless children, the forgotten sufferers, these are the children of the Most High God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Repent you sinners, repent you murders, turn away from the life of sacrifice, recognize the sanctity of life. When the mother kills a child, she is a murderer, when the doctor kills a child, they are a murderer, when the father forces an abortion, he is a murderer. If your hand has moved the lever, even an ounce, it is stained red.
My message to the saints, present the Gospel. Present the Gospel with a fervent fire that is unbeknownst to the cowards and the callous, the cult of child sacrifice. Present the Gospel as a Christian, someone who believes in the Word of God and believes Paul’s fateful words in Romans 1:16-18. “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, it is the Power of God that brings salvation…”, this message is the POWER OF GOD. So, speak it with your chest, children are murdered every day, by the cart load, because we hide the truth in darkness and we don’t let the world feel the fire of a white-hot Gospel. We are more than conquers, Jesus told us to go out into the world and make disciples, His disciples don’t murder children. Which means we haven’t made enough disciples, He gave you marching orders, now go.
To Christ be the Glory.
