From now until November, every debate stage will showcase a series of questions about the 2nd Amendment. However, the questions are rarely presented from the standpoint of addressing the topic in its legal glory as found in the Constitution. You know, like, as a right. While everyone on the main stage kicks back and enjoys the shiny and pure 1st Amendment, questions regarding the 2nd will enter the stage dirty and smothered with negative connotations. They enter the stage in the form of “gun violence”, “assault rifles”, “epidemic”, and “crisis”. Both candidates will dance around those nasty words and attempt to eloquently deliver their grand solutions to fix the problem, all in an embarrassing attempt to calm the storm.
We don’t need a crystal ball to tell us exactly what we can expect from the upcoming debate stage and big media. The opposing arguments are always the same and completely true. It’s true, you don’t need a 30-round magazine to kill a deer. It’s true that modern firearms are vastly different than those available during the construction of our Constitution. However, to keep governmental overreach in check, you must have similar means. This, of course, is already governmentally limited (reference The National Firearms Act of 1934 or any recent example of ATF overreach like bump stocks or pistol braces).
As a father of two boys, sure, I want my children to mature having an appreciation for nature, conservation efforts, and the ability to feed themselves beyond the local deli. However, beyond hunting, they will also learn the true purpose of the 2nd Amendment. I intend to raise two men who understand the need to dump the tea when enough becomes enough.
Our forefathers’ pen was never put to paper to protect our right to hunt. They held a foundational understanding that too much reliance on big government was a bad thing. In fact, it was held as the second most important point to be made when establishing our country.
They know this. Left-wing politicians and media outlets aren’t dumb. By talking about the absurdity of needing 30 shots to take down a deer and painting private American gun owners as evil plotting basement-dwellers, they deflect from the intended purpose. The Second Amendment was penned to guard against a tyrannical government.
They know this too. They will continue to push because an unarmed, timid, and government-reliant population is easier to control. Under Hitler’s control, Germany implemented laws that made it easier for some groups of people to acquire firearms (not for hunting) and more difficult for others. This was in conjunction with an initiative confiscating registered firearms from groups of people they sought to control. It didn’t end well. People must have the means to defend themselves, especially against government forces.
They know this too. Imagine the Biden administration providing only fancy promises and criticism of firearms to the people of Ukraine. Would the left still be in support? Maybe someone should let them know that military-style rifles (black plastic – scary looking) only belong in the hands of the Military. Maybe we could let them know that they only need 5-round magazines. Maybe the Ukrainian citizens could have simply been assured that their government had everything under control.
We ALL know. Yet, the talks continue. How about a Constitutionally grounded response? It doesn’t have to be fancy. There is bupkis to fix through additional controls. Maybe a universally adopted response could cut the pageantry. Try this – I’ll keep mine; you keep yours, and we can maintain mutually cautious respect for one another. Wolves don’t attack when the sheep have teeth.
