Russian authorities have accused Ukrainian forces of conducting an attack very close to a nuclear power plant. Zaporizhzhia, the Ukrainian power plant under the control of Russian forces since February 2022, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe containing 6 VVER-1000 pressurized light water nuclear reactors.

Built by the Soviet Union in 1985 and managed by Ukrainian energy giant Energoatom, Zaporizhzhia provided nearly 50% of Ukrainian energy as of 2020. The plant has been offline since the beginning of the war.
The attack comes as Ukrainian forces continue their incursion into Russia.
Just days ago, a fire was reported at the plant, stoking fears of increased nuclear disaster.

Russian authorities seek communication with the International Atomic Energy Agency to discuss and warn against repeat attacks by Ukrainian forces. Fears are growing that such incidents would cause catastrophic damage like the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 when nearly 165,000 km2 across Europe were affected by contamination.
The plant’s six dormant reactors, located in close proximity to the fighting, require external power to maintain cooling of the nuclear material.
