Tensions rise in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, due to an increase in protests of the seemingly illegitimate victory of President Nicolas Maduro after the July 28th general election in the country. Venezuela has faced weeks of unrest throughout the country due to the Maduro Administration’s inability to release the full breakdown of the votes, proving his victory was authentic.

So far, 25 demonstrators have been killed with more than 200 wounded and 2,500 arrested. International concern grows that the reigning power will initiate a more hardened attack on the opposition protests. Human rights organizations, including the US and other Western governments, have expressed concern and even denied the validity of the results.

Government security resources have been increased at protest sites across the oil rich nation, causing fears of more widespread turbulence.
After the 2013 death of Socialist President, Hugo Chavez, Nicolas Maduro assumed power and has been blamed for the nation’s economic downfall which has caused millions of Venezuelans to flee the country.
Neighbors Brazil and Colombia have demanded new elections in Venezuela, citing too many irregularities and inaccurate vote counting. International organizations are insistent that vote tallies from individual polling locations be released for the world to verify the results, a request the Maduro regime is so far unable to fulfill.
