Russian forces have captured the town of Zalizne.
The town, formerly known as Artyomovo, is located in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk Oblast. Its name was changed to Zalizne, conforming to the Ukrainian law prohibiting names of communist origins in 2016.

As of the Ukrainian census in 2001, 83% of its inhabitants were native Russian speakers.
The victory is a step in the right direction for Russia, who aim to conquer the larger nearby city of Toretsk, a productive, industrial coal mining town located on the bank of Kryvyi Toretsk river in the Donbas region.
Its prewar population was around 35,000.
Russian headway inside Ukraine comes as Ukrainian forces make advances inside Russia’s Kursk region.
