The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has announced that it expects more monkeypox cases to appear in the coming weeks, although the true risk of the illness remains low. To be safe, the agency has increased its risk assessment to moderate due to travelers from Africa being in possible contact with those affected on the continent.

The most recent outbreak occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has spread to several other African countries. Sweden now has confirmed a case, making it the first non-African country to have to deal with the current strain of the disease (clade Ib).
Monkeypox is spread by “close contact”, most commonly sexual contact- men having sex with men.

ECDPC predicts the effect of monkeypox in Europe will be minimal, citing enhanced surveillance and control measures as the cause of their optimism. Testing individuals who have recently traveled to Africa or have contact with others who recently returned from the region is essential. Those who are experiencing flu-like symptoms and pus-filled legions should contact a doctor immediately.
