India Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv this morning to discuss a pathway to peace.
Modi’s visit, coming after receiving criticism after visiting Moscow, occurs after the controversial Ukrainian invasion of the Kursk region of Russia.

India, which has become a strong economic ally of Russia since the beginning of the war in February of 2022 even after significant international sanctions, is the target of Kyiv’s attempts to develop alliances around the globe in hopes of rallying support for their war efforts.
Kyiv officials have touted India’s relationship with Moscow as “influential” and view the recent economic partnership as damaging to Ukrainian interests.

Russian oil accounts for more than 40% of India’s energy imports.
Experts familiar with the matter contend that for peace to have a chance, the military situation in the region must stabilize- a tall order after the escalation following the August 6th Ukrainian invasion into Russia.
Modi’s Kyiv visit is ostensibly a signal to the world that India is not tactically aligned with Russia, but rather a nation that seeks to cool short-term tensions to achieve global peace.
