The unsuspecting attack came at the heels of the Ukrainian invasion into the Kursk region earlier this month.
Moscow, located in Western Russia, is home to approximately 22 million Russians and has a per capita GDP of about 32,000 USD.

To date, Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine and is hell-bent on repelling Ukrainian attacks into the Kursk region, the largest incursion into Russia since WWII.
This is not the first time Ukraine has attempted an attack on the Russian capital; at least 8 drones were shot down in a similar attack back in May of 2023.
